Can We Stay Over Tonight? / 3 - 5 October 2008

'Can We Stay Over Tonight?' Invite

Robert Chavasse

Patrick Lowry

Oliver Sutherland

Curated by Rachel Butcher,

Robert Chavasse, Anouk Mercier

Can we stay over tonight? presented three different illusionary scenarios; you, the visitor, were invited to explore the scenes.

Oliver Sutherland presented an alternate view on the confidence and belief we have in NASA and the information it projects, ‘No-one else can say anything different because no-one else has a spaceship ’. Patrick Lowry and Rob Chavasse created works that, whilst desiring belief, allowed themselves to be undermined by the discovery of their in-authenticity. The lengths the artists go to in order to provide the viewer with these realistic presences call into question the balance between the subtle and the ridiculous.

Lowry’s blocked exit, Chavasse’s heavy rain and Sutherland’s infinite staircase provided no easy way out, offering instead a place in which to remain and wait.

Oliver Sutherland graduated from The University Collage Falmouth in 2007. He has recently exhibited at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall and Spike Island, Bristol.
Patrick Lowry is based in Cornwall. He has recently exhibited at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall and in Rhene, The Netherlands, this is his first show in Bristol.
Rob Chavasse graduated from the University of the West of England, Bristol in 2008. He is the recipient of the Spike Island/UWE Graduate fellowship 2008/2009.
