Fuck Gesture with Bristol Anarchist Bookfair presents a night of films exploring the labour process and the process of realising alternative collective desires.

Opening with a brilliant 1960s agitprop film essay which demystifies the devastation of napalm with a banal drama set in the American workplace. It explores the division of labour and hierarchies of command that constitute the produce of a nation.

“Because of the intensified division of labour, many technicians and scientists can no longer recognise the contribution they have made to weapons of mass destruction. Regarding the crimes in Vietnam they feel like observers.”

René Clair’s musical farce ‘À Nous la Liberté’ (Freedom For Us) was one of the early triumphs of sound cinema and has retained its status as one of the all-time greats of French cinema. A sharp critique of the era, it tells the tale of two prison cellmates separated in their escape attempt. Through sleight and entrepreneurialism one becomes a successful industrialist while the other finds himself a mere automaton lost in the new conveyor belt world of factory life. Essentially an uplifting tale of enduring friendship, our characters get sidetracked by commerce and complacency before taking to the road again singing “À Nous La Liberté!” - “Freedom is ours!”

Reel News Collectives’ ‘The Legacy of the Black Panthers’ is a British documentary from 2008. Spawned by the civil rights movement of the 60s, the Black Panther Party have been constantly misrepresented. Here ex-members speak for themselves about this revolutionary party, particularly their groundbreaking community activism, and why they are still so relevant today.

Total programme length: 2 hours 15 minutes  (with breaks)

This is a heads-up event for the Bristol Anarchist Bookfair which takes place at The Island, Bridewell Street, Bristol on Saturday September 12th 2009.
